Lee Da-hae: simply tired, or irresponsible actress?

Lee Da-hae has quit East of Eden. Her decision comes without warning, and is so sudden that viewers have been caught completely off-guard and are wondering why.

She posted on the show’s message board on the 22nd, “It was confusing to take on this character of Hye-rin, who even I can’t understand… As an actor in this drama, I feel a duty and responsibility to stay with it through the end. But I’m sorry to tell you I can no longer act in this situation, feeling this way.” She added, “I don’t want to act saying and doing such illogical, out-of-character things in this role that makes me look like an idiot.”

Apparently the production is currently consulting with the writer on how to write her out of the show; Lee will probably appear for a few more episodes. (Who wants to bet that insulting the writer in her goodbye message isn’t the best way to get a glorious send-off?) Her action has spawned a lot of speculation among fans, some who would like to be understanding and others who decry her act as irresponsible and unprofessional.

Choi Ji-woo Makes First Appearance in 'Period Drama'

It may come as a surprise that Choi Ji-woo has made her first appearance in a period drama in her 14-year acting career with the role of a traditional entertainer or gisaeng. But it happened in the new, contemporary melodrama "Star's Lover." The SBS show started on Dec. 10, and Choi plays a role of top actress Lee Ma-ri.

It is, in other words, only a role within a role. The scene sets off her beauty in traditional clothes and a folding screen with ume flowers. With her hair braided up, Choi looks like a painting that has just come alive. Production staff said Choi looks as if the legendary Chosun-era gisaeng Hwang Jin-yi came back to life.

Although Choi only appears only for a few seconds in this outfit, she spent three hours in makeup and getting dressed. "It was a bit disappointing as it was such a short scene, but now one of my dreams has come true: I've made my first appearance in a period drama," Choi said.

Beethoven Virus

Beethoven Virus is a popular drama series on MBC that aired its final episode on Wednesday, November 12. The show recorded an impressive average viewer rating of 20 percent. It drew significant attention from viewers and critics because it revealed the lives of classical musicians in an orchestra—a relatively fresh topic for a TV drama series.
The series garnered a lot of attention right from the start with its cast. Maestro conductor, Kang Ma-eh, was played by one of Korea’s leading male actors, Kim Myung-min, who rose to fame with his critically acclaimed role as Admiral Yi Sun-shin in the 2004 history drama series entitled ‘Immortal Yi Sun-shin’ on KBS. In ‘Beethoven Virus’, Kang Mah-eh is portrayed as an elite forty-year-old orchestra conductor with a notorious reputation for his rough personality and sharp tongue—hence his nickname ‘orchestra killer’. He believes classical music was created strictly for the nobility.

Younger-generation TV viewers raved over hunky young actor Jang Geun-suk, who played the role of Kang Gun-woo, a traffic police who was born with a gift for music. He doesn’t even know how to read a music score, yet he possesses a natural talent for playing the trumpet simply by ear. He eventually joins a project orchestra through a friend’s recommendation, which gives him an opportunity to open his eyes and ears to music and conducting.

Even the press conference held prior to the regular televising of the drama series surprised fans with a classical concert complete with a full-scale orchestra. Kim Myung-min conducted the orchestra himself when it performed Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe and Brahms' Hungarian Dances in front of reporters and fans who flocked to the venue. Renowned musicians made cameo appearances in the drama, including piano prodigy Lim Dong-hyeok as himself and another by popular Korean-American violinist Richard Yongjae O`Neil.

Lee Jun-ki to Star in Drama Next Spring

Today’s hottest actor Lee Jun-ki has decided to star in the tentatively titled “Heroes.” To be aired on SBS next April, the drama is about a genius scam artist who gathers a team of riffraff to fight corruption and injustice.

Lee’s last work was a historical fusion drama, “Iljimae,” which won him wide acclaim and a huge following of new fans. However, he has been concerned about living up to the fame and expectations brought on by his talented acting in “Iljimae,” and has not been able to make any decisions on his next work. Lee says his character in “Heroes” is very appealing because he has survived the darkest days of his life and rose above it all to bring justice to the world. Kwon Ki-young, the writer of “Heroes,” wanted to deliver to the Korean people a message of hope and love through the adventures of these not-so-perfect characters.

Song Hye-kyo Goes Behind the Scenes in New Drama

Actress Song Hye-kyo makes her comeback with a new soap opera titled “Worlds Within” four years after her last drama “Full House” in 2004.

“When I first read the synopsis I found it very interesting. As I respect and strongly believe in director Pyo Min-soo and swriter Noh Hee-kyung, there was no reason to refuse,” Song said. Departing from her previous feminine image, she takes the role of Joo Jun-young, a promising rookie TV producer, who exudes tomboyish charm.

“I tried to look like a real TV producer, as natural as possible while avoiding looking dirty or unkempt. Of the characters that I have played, this is the most realistic.”

Worlds Within,” about the hectic lives of a drama production team, starts on KBS 2 next Monday.

Hallyu Star, Bae Yong-jun, will be returning to television screens in a new drama series about wine. The show, entitled,Water Drops of God, will hit screen late 2009.
The series is based on the original Japanese animation series of the same name and soon became a bestseller, stirring up a newfound interest in wine throughout Japan. As Bae Yong-jun rested up and received treatments for his injuries during his last drama in 2007,

'Sikgaek' offers culinary journey for Korean tastes

The 24-episode drama "Sikgaek" is enjoying popularity, stimulating the appetite of TV audience around the country. Based on Hur Young-man's popular comic series of the same name, the film version of the series, titled "Le Grand Chef," was also a huge hit when it was released last year. In the drama, a culinary genius dreams of becoming the best chef in the country. Korean Wave star Kim Rae-won plays the leading role, Sung-chan, and Kwon Oh-jung plays his rival, Bong-ju. A beautiful restaurant manager and a food magazine journalist, played by actress Kim So-yun and Nam Sang-mi, form a love triangle, raising the tension. While the film version focused more on the fierce cooking competitions between two main characters, the drama looks for the essence of Korean cuisine, showing Sung-chan scouring the countryside to find the best cooking ingredients.

Keen media interest in and out of the country is also being paid to the drama. Unlike the TV show "Daejanggum," where a female chef cooks for the royal family during the Joseon Dynasty, “Sikgaek” shows more common Korean cuisine consumed in daily lives. Recent episodes featured hanwoo, or Korean beef, competitions, introducing how high-quality Korean cows are raised, slaughtered and cooked. "The reason why good hanwoo is more expensive than imported beef is explained in our drama. Because the producing process is seen in detail, I hope the drama to be helpful for hanwoo consumption," Kim Rae-won told reporters during a news conference.

Nam Sang-mi, who plays a feisty journalist in the drama, added, "The whole experience, traveling around Korea, feels like a photo album."
Aired by local broadcaster SBS, the drama continues until the end of August.
